Coil built vase. Alternated wax resist (the smoky gray) with stripes of a metallic glaze, which fired polychromatically.
Als das Kind Kind war,
ging es mit hängenden Armen,
wollte der Bach sei ein Fluß,
der Fluß sei ein Strom,
und diese Pfütze das Meer.(When the child was a child
It walked with arms swinging,
Wanted the brook to be a river,
The river to be a torrent,
And this puddle to be the sea.)
This raku-fired piece is meant to evoke organic amusement, bordering on the absurd. Its stripes go round and round and round, their interplay reminding me of sensations which swirl together like water. The thrill brought by disorientation—of wind-whipping hair and a small stomach unwinding fast enough for the world to settle down singing.
